Asking Questions in a Group Class

Because this is an online English class that involves many people, student microphones will be turned off. If we left them on there would be so much noise during the lesson it would be impossible to learn anything. But if your microphone is turned off, how are you supposed to ask questions and try out new words?

For simple quick questions, you can just use the chat box:

It works like any other chatroom you've used before with maybe a few extra functions. For example, see the button circled in red? If you click this button a menu will come up where you can email the text in the chatroom to yourself. This is very useful if you want a record for later.

But what if you don't have a simple question? What if you want to try out an example sentence and see what the class and the teacher think about it? What if you need a more detailed explanation about something?

Just like in a normal classroom the best way to get the teacher's attention is by Raising Your Hand.

See the button of the little figure in the left corner of the classroom? When you press it the following menu pops up:

There are many options on this menu, but for now the most important one is the top selection "Raise Hand". This will signal the teacher that you have a question. Once you raise your hand the teacher will turn on your microphone so that you can ask it. The talk button should be pressed automatically so it looks like this:

You should not have to press this button yourself. It should look like that automatically, but if it doesn't you may need to click it. If the Talk button is not pressed down then your microphone will not go on.

Once you've asked your question and gotten an answer the teacher will turn off your microphone again and continue with class.

And that's it! :) Participation is important so don't be afraid to use either the chatbox or to Raise Your Hand!
